Workshops and Classes: Research metrics and citation analysis tools

Research metrics and citation analysis tools

On this page you will find four videos which make up the pre-workshop viewing task ahead of the iSkills workshop Research metrics and citation analysis tools; and a task sheet which we would also like you to work through before the session.  The videos provide an introduction to citation tracking and bibliometrics. They examine a range of tools for finding journal metrics, article metrics and author metrics in the context of moves towards responsible metrics in measuring the impact of publications and researchers. The areas covered include:

  • Understanding the main issues involved in using citation analysis to measure impact
  • Using Journal Citation Reports and Scimago Journal Rank to find journals and journal-level metrics
  • Using Web of Science, Scopus and Google Scholar to track and count citations to papers and individual researchers
  • Calculating your own h-index
  • Measuring impact using altmetrics
  • Creating a researcher profile and using ORCID IDs to identify your work

For anyone not attending the live session workshop, these videos may be watched as a useful introduction to citation tracking and bibliometrics.

The videos have captions, and we are in the process of creating their transcripts.

We would welcome feedback on the video. Please fill in this short survey.
