Workshops and Classes: Getting started in Oxford libraries

Getting started in Oxford libraries

These videos concentrate on how to use SOLO. Please consult the Bodleian Libraries website for the most recent updates on services and what materials are currently accessible.

Below you will find a series of videos adapted from the workshop iSkills: Getting started in Oxford libraries. The videos introduce you to SOLO, the University's resource discovery tool, specifically concentrating on:

  • Finding a book
  • Finding an article
  • Finding a journal
  • Saving, tracing and exporting SOLO records

There is also at the bottom of the page called 'Welcome to the Bodleian Libraries for new readers', which was created for new incoming students in the academic year 2020-2021.

The videos have captions and you will find transcripts as an alternative for each video.

We would welcome feedback on this series of videos. Please fill in this short survey: https://oxford.onlinesurveys.ac.uk/getting-started-in-oxford-libraries-video-series.

The video creators are Rachel Childs and Helen Bond.

Finding a book in SOLO

This video introduces you to SOLO's simple search function and:

  • sorting and filtering your results
  • clustered results
  • print books
  • e-books
  • electronic Legal Deposit (eLD)

Video created by Rachel Childs 23rd June 2020.

Finding an article in SOLO

An explanation on how to find a journal article in SOLO.

Video created by Rachel Childs 2nd July 2020.

Finding a journal in SOLO

Sometimes you may not be able to access a specific e-journal article on SOLO because it is too old, hasn't been indexed or we only have the journal available in print rather than online. This video shows you how to find a journal using the advanced search in SOLO, which enables you to browse e-journals and print journals for the article you need.

Video created by Rachel Childs 7th July 2020.

Saving, tracing and exporting SOLO records

There are lots of features in SOLO that can help speed up and make your research process easier. Learn how to:

  • get a permalink to an item
  • email yourself details of an item
  • save items to your Favourites
  • save a search query so that you can re-run the search in the future
  • conduct citation tracing
  • cite and export records

Video created by Rachel Childs 30th June 2020.
