Bodleian iSkills for the Medical Sciences Division and OUH staff: Introduction to Mendeley

Do you need help managing your references? Do you need help citing references in your documents? This online session will introduce you to Mendeley (www.mendeley.com) - a free programme which can help you to store, organise and retrieve your references and PDFs; as well as cite references in documents and create bibliographies quickly and easily.

Objectives:

  • understand what Mendeley is and what it can do for you
  • create a Mendeley account and install Mendeley Desktop
  • import references from PubMed   
  • import references directly from a database such as Ovid Embase   
  • know how to annotate and manage PDFs using Mendeley   
  • know how to synchronise your desktop and web libraries   
  • create a bibliography
  • cite references in document

Intended Audience: Postgraduate students, researchers and university and OUH staff based on the Old Road Campus or in Medical Sciences Division departments elsewhere in Headington - this session is specifically planned for the Medical Sciences and will not be appropriate for other subject areas.  For other subject areas, please see our LibGuide page Mendeley: Managing your references for online tutorials and help.

Dates and booking:

Online booking requires your SSO (Oxford University Single Sign On).  However, if you are an OUH staff member and do not have an SSO you may book by emailing usered@bodleian.ox.ac.uk directly from your OUH email address - make sure you give us the title(s) and date(s) of any workshops you want to book onto!

Format:  Online presentation through Microsoft Teams, with practical exercises

What you will need: 

1. You will need to have downloaded Mendeley Desktop to your desktop (you can do this from https://www.mendeley.com/download-desktop/)

2. You will need to have a Mendeley account set up (to do this go to https://www.mendeley.com/sign/in?dgcid=Mendeley_Desktop_Welcome-Register/ and click on 'Try Another Way' (DON'T use the “Sign in via your institution” option)

3. To attend the session you will need to have the Microsoft Teams desktop app installed, or log in with a browser (must be Chrome or Edge). Please read our guidance notes below on using Teams.  You will need a speaker and microphone for listening and speaking. You need to be online with a reliable internet connection.
