Bodleian Libraries Enquiry Service: Photocopying Services

The Enquiry Service provided by the Main Enquiry Desk team of the Bodleian Library with additional information about broader library services.

Postal Photocopying

The Bodleian offers a staff-mediated photocopying service, and you may apply for copies to be sent to your home for your convenience.

What can I have copied?

Items eligible for the staff mediated postal photocopying service must meet the following criteria:

  • Be in good condition
  • Published after 1800
  • Weigh less than 4kg.

Some items cannot be photocopied, including many theses, rare books, manuscripts and microfilms.

There are also copyright restrictions that affect the amount of photocopying that can be done from an individual book, journal or thesis.

Items must meet the criteria and photocopies will be made at the discretion of staff.

How do I apply?

To apply for the service, please download and complete the Postal Photocopies Order Form (PDF).

Send the completed form to: Main Enquiry Desk, Bodleian Library, Broad Street, Oxford, OX1 3BG. We will process your application as quickly as possible.

Alternatively, you can pick up a form from inside the Bodleian (there are copies at Main Enquiry Desk and at the Reserve Desks) and hand it to a member of library staff who will process your order.

How do I pay?

Payment can be made using your PCAS account, or by credit/debit card. Please note, there is a minimum charge of £10.00 for this service. If you use the service regularly, we advise that you set up a PCAS account in order to speed up the payments process.

More information about prices, payment and what you can get copies of can be found on the Bodleian website.

PCAS- Print, Copy and Scan

What is PCAS?

PCAS (Print, Copy and Scan at the Bodleian Libraries) is a service available to all library users, and is available across most Bodleian Libraries. Users can print from library computers and their own laptops when in the library, and can also send jobs to the printers remotely using Remote Print.

How do I set up an account?

All Bodleian Libraries users automatically have a PCAS account which uses the same login as the Bodleian Libraries Account (which is also used to log in to reading room PCs and the "Bodleian Libraries" wifi). The username is the 7 digit barcode number on your card. The password can be reset at Further information about this account can be found in the section on library logins in the Bodleian Library and Radcliffe Camera LibGuide.

When you go to the photocopiers for the first time, tap your card on the touch panel. You will be prompted to enter your Bodleian Libraries Account username and password on the touchscreen. This will link your PCAS account to your library card, so that next time you can just tap your card to log in.

Main Enquiry Desk and Reading Room staff are happy to assist readers with PCAS.

How do I add money to my account?

Your PCAS account can be topped-up using a credit or debit card at PCAS WebPay.

Alternatively, readers can top-up their account with cash using the auto-loader machine located near the Main Enquiry Desk, situated at the North End of the Lower Reading Room. The auto-loader takes notes and coins but does not give change. A change machine is situated on the ground floor on the north side of the Library in the lift vestibule.

Where are the photocopiers located in the Bodleian?

Self-service PCAS machines can be found for the Lower Reading Room off the north landing behind the Main Enquiry Desk; in the middle of the Upper Reading Room, next to the Staffed Reserve desk; in the Upper and Lower Gladstone Link and in the Lower and Upper Radcliffe Camera.

I need help..

Each machine has a 'how to' guide next to it with instructions on how to use it. If in doubt, library staff are always on hand to assist - just ask. Guides are also available on the PCAS web-page

Staff-Mediated Copying

What is the staff-mediated service?

The Bodleian Library offers a staff-mediated photocopying service, for items that cannot be photocopied by readers themselves (e.g. if the item is too big or heavy, published before 1900, or in bad condition).

Please see the criteria for staff-mediated photocopying.

How much does it cost?

Currently prices per page are as follows:

  • 20p - for A4/A3 black and white photocopy (singles or openings)
  • £1   - for A4 colour photocopy (singles or openings)
  • £2   - for A3 colour photocopy (singles or openings)

How do I place an order?

Forms can be found at reserve desks in the Bodleian reading rooms, and reading room staff will be happy to assist in processing the forms. Please note that orders can only be placed up to 30 minutes before closing time, and payment is by PCAS account. We do accept cheques if the order amounts to above £10.

Where do I collect my order?

Readers can expect the turnaround for submitted jobs to be 72 hours, and should pick up their photocopy orders from the intrays adjacent to the Main Enquiry Desk in the Lower Reading Room. Orders are kept under your surname.
