Bodleian Libraries Enquiry Service: Advance Orders

The Enquiry Service provided by the Main Enquiry Desk team of the Bodleian Library with additional information about broader library services.

Advance Orders: Closed Stack

If you are planning to visit the Bodleian Library for a short time, it is a good idea to locate material in advance using the online catalogue SOLO. The majority of the Bodleian collections are held in remote storage (not on open shelves in the library) and therefore must be requested online for delivery to a reading room before they can be consulted. Items that are immediately available on the open shelves generally display the status 'Available' in SOLO and do not need to be requested. Off-site material will display the status 'Closed Stack' in SOLO, for example:

If you already have a library card, you should sign in to SOLO and place a Hold on any item you wish to consult in the Library.  Please allow at least two working days for delivery before your visit. Library users with a valid email address linked to their library account will be alerted via email when the item is ready for use.

If you do not yet have a library card and wish to see 'Closed Stack' material at the start of your visit, please contact us in advance.

'Closed Stack' requests are only possible for those with a library card and associated online library account. If any of the material you wish to consult on the first day of your visit to the library are in 'closed stack', we will be happy to order up to six items on your behalf. Please send an email to:
