Ebooks: Finding ebooks

What do we mean by ebook?

Ebook - green dot

An ebook which the libraries have purchased, or which is freely available on the web. See the sections on Finding and Using ebooks for information on these.

Electronic Legal Deposit (eLD) - orange dot

The electronic equivalent of a 'library use only' print book - UK publishers donate us these texts because we are a Legal Deposit library. They can only be read on library computers (not your own laptop) from within one of the Bodleian Libraries. The remainder of this guide does not apply to these resources; for more information on e-Legal Deposit, visit the guide below:

Searching for ebooks

The library catalogue SOLO is the best place to find individual ebooks. Search for the book you want and if an ebook is available it will appear along with the print version of the book. You may wish to change the drop-down menu from 'Search Everything' to 'All libraries/collections' to avoid book reviews.

From here you can click on the title of the book or 'See all versions' and then click on 'Online access' to read the ebook itself.

If you are only interested in ebooks and not print copies, you can filter your search results using the 'Show only:' options on the left. Click 'Online Resources'.
