Oxfordshire History for Continuing Education: Finding books

A guide to finding resources on the history of Oxford and Oxfordshire

How to find books on SOLO

You can locate books (both print and electronic) held in Oxford University libraries by looking them up on SOLO, Oxford libraries catalogue, at http://solo.bodleian.ox.ac.uk

Are you looking for a specific book?

Enter the author's surname and a few significant words from the title. Leave out words like 'the', 'an', 'of' etc.

Are you only interested in books held by the Rewley House Continuing Education Library?

On the main SOLO search screen, click 'All libraries/Collections' and select 'Continuing Education Library' from the dropdown box.

For more information on searching SOLO, see the SOLO Guide.

Oxfordshire History Centre

You will often see copies of books about Oxfordshire with the location on SOLO 'Oxfordshire History Centre'.  The Oxfordshire History Centre is not part of Oxford University; it is the Oxfordshire county archive and local history library, based in Cowley. For more information see the Oxfordshire History Centre website.

Oxfordshire collections in the Bodleian Library

As a Legal Deposit library, the Bodleian Library holds material published in the UK about Oxfordshire. Note that many items are on closed access and must be called up from the stacks on SOLO.
The Bodleian also holds many manuscript and special collections relating to both the history of Oxfordshire and the history of the University. You may find the guide: Finding aids - Early Modern and Modern Manuscripts in the Bodleian Library useful, particularly the information on the page headed Oxford. This guide contains information on finding both print and online resources within the Bodleian collections.

Oxfordshire collections in other Oxford University libraries

Students on award-bearing courses - undergraduate and postgraduate certificate and diploma courses and Masters courses - may use other Oxford University libraries.

Oxfordshire studies material may be found at many libraries including:
