General workshops and classes

These workshops focus on information skills and resources across a wide range of disciplines.  They are primarily aimed at University of Oxford students and staff and, for particular workshops, OUH staff. We will continue to deliver the workshops in Trinity Term 2021 through a combination of webinars and pre-recorded videosPlease contact if you are an OUH member or external reader wishing to attend any of our workshops.  

Bodleian iSkills - Workshops in Information Discovery & Scholarly Communications

This programme is designed to help you to make effective use of scholarly materials. We cover

  • Information discovery and searching for scholarly materials
  • Endnote, RefWorks, Zotero and Mendeley for managing references and formatting footnotes and bibliographies
  • Keeping up to date with new research
  • Responsible research metrics
  • Understanding copyright and looking after your intellectual property
  • Open Access publishing and complying with funder mandates for open access
  • Managing your research data

Research Skills Toolkit 

Note: Lockdown restrictions prevented the Research Skills Toolkit from running in Hilary Term 2021.

These 2 hour workshops, run in January of each year, introduce key software and online tools for your research, hone your searching and information skills and introduce you to subject specialists.  Some of the topics on offer include

  • Finding articles, papers, conferences and theses
  • Keeping up to date with emerging research
  • Using Endnote to manage your references
  • Finding and manipulating images
  • Finding highly cited journals and measuring research impact

Subject based workshops and classes

The workshops below focus on a particular subject area or are provided for a specific Division, Faculty or Department.  Please check "who may attend" to find out if you are eligible to attend these workshops.

English Language and Literature  - English Faculty Library Information Skills Training Programme
Who may attend the English Programme? - Faculty of English students (undergraduates and postgraduate research and taught course students), Oxford University affiliated Visiting Students studying English Literature & Language.

History - Information Skills Programme
Who may attend the History Programme?  All members of Oxford University History Faculty may attend the various sessions as advertised and as is most appropriate. Members of other Faculties may attend if there is space and upon arrangement. Please contact Isabel Holowaty for more information.

Law – Bodleian Law Library Research Classes 
Who may attend the Law programme?  Although the sessions are designed primarily for law students, other students and researchers with an interest in the subject can attend.  If uncertain then contact

Medical Sciences - MSD and OUH Information Skills Training
Who may attend?  This programme supports anyone doing research in the Medical Sciences Division, and is open to both Medical Sciences Division members and OUH staff (unless otherwise stated).

Modern Languages - Taylor Institution Library Information Skills Training
Who may attend the Modern Languages programme?  Members of the faculty of Medieval and Modern Languages. 

Mathematical, Physical and Life Sciences - Research Information Training
Who may attend? The training programme is designed to provide support to students and staff undertaking research in the Mathematical, Physical and Life Sciences.

Social Sciences - Social Sciences Research and Skills Training  
Who may attend? - Graduate students in the Social Sciences Division. Library staff work with the Oxford ESRC Doctoral Training Centre to provide a wide range of workshops in this training programme.  For more information please contact
