Finding books on your reading list

Your tutor will probably give you a reading list. It may already be marked up with the shelfmarks of the books. The Library aims to have at least one copy of books on your list. However sometimes books are not obtainable, and sometimes tutors hand out additional reading during classes.

You can check locations and availability of items on your reading list using SOLO, the library catalogue. You can also use it to find other books on your topic.

How to find books on SOLO

SOLO logo

SOLO is the catalogue for all Oxford University libraries. You can access SOLO from any internet connection at  http://solo.bodleian.ox.ac.uk.  You do not need a password to search SOLO.

You can use the search box on the left to get started, or follow the link above.

SOLO is very easy to use but there is a lot of help available. Library staff will be pleased to give you an introduction and there are ways of getting help if you are using SOLO at home, work, Ewert House etc:

  • Click 'Help' towards the top right of the screen to access the SOLO Guide.
  • There are also some video tutorials towards the bottom right of the screen.
  • During office hours, you will see a SOLO LIve Help box on the screen. You can use this to chat online to a member of Bodleian Libraries staff.

Top tips for using SOLO

Are you looking for a specific book?

Enter the author's surname and a few significant words from the title. Leave out words like 'the', 'an', 'of' etc

To find books in the Rewley House Continuing Education Library:

On the main SOLO search screen, click 'All libraries/Collections' and select 'Continuing Education Library' from the dropdown box

To find locations/availability of books:

  • When you have entered your search and some results appear, click 'Find & Request'
  • If more than one library has the book, you will see a list of libraries. Click the + sign beside 'Continuing Education Library'
  • Note the information in the column headed 'call number' - this tells you where to find the book
  • Look at the column headed 'Type/Status'. Available means the book is on the shelf. 'Due date' with a date means that it is on loan and due back on the date shown. If it is on loan, you can ask library staff to reserve it for you, or you can do this yourself, see How do I reserve a book?
