Open Access

Considering Open Access requirements

Making your publications 'Open Access' is increasingly important, as it both improves the visibility of your work and helps ensure your eligibility for the next REF. In addition, many funding bodies require grant holders to make their publications open access. Find out more and deposit your work...

Ways of achieving open access

There are two ways of making your article open access

  • "Gold" (immediate open access) - The gold route ensures that your article becomes open access immediately on publication. In many cases an APC is paid to the publisher to achieve this.  The Gold route is available to fully open access journals (you can see a list in the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) and for many traditional journals which are considered as hybrids offering both open access and non open access publishing models.
  • "Green" - The green route involves publishing in a subscription journal and then making a version of your article available through a repository such as the Oxford Research Archive.  Your publisher will often oblige you to delay open access until aften an embargo period has elapsed
