Human Rights in the Asia/Pacific Region

Although there is no specific system that covers all of the Asia/Pacific region a lot of countries have signed up to the United Nations treaties. Some countries in the region have more developed human rights systems than others.  The box below looks at each country and more information can be found by looking at the country reports.

There is a Asian Human Rights Commission which was set up 1986 as a non-governmental organisation to help promote Human Rights within the region.

Future Intergovernmental Human Rights Systems

On the 8th August 1967 the Association of Southeast Asian Nations was established and this has now 10 members: Indonesia (1967), Malaysia (1967), Philippines (1967), Singapore (1967), Thailand (1967), Brunei Darussalam (1984), Vietnam  (1995), Lao PDR (1997), Myanmar (1997) and Cambodia (1997).  This was not related to Human Rights but human rights has become a part of the remit recently with the  decision to draft a ASEAN Human Rights Declaration.  More information can be found on the Working Group for the ASEAN Human Rights Mechanism pages.

Resources in the Bodleian Law Library

Below are books relating to human rights in the Asia Pacific region.  The books are split between Public International section and the collections for law in the specific country.  Not all books are listed and so search SOLO especially if you are looking for books relating to specific countries.  Other resources that may be of use as a starting point are Max Planck Encyclopaedia (OU Members only via SOLO) or the resource listed on the box on the left.  There is also a journal called Asia-Pacific Journal on Human Rights and the Law and this is available at General 300 A149.5 or online to OU members through Oxford e-journals

Reports by Country

Below is a list of links to reports and information for the different states from the United Nations and different human rights organisations.  There are also links to local human rights organisations and documentation centres where available, please note that these may not be official sources of information and for some countries there are other organisations not mentioned.  Not all countries are listed see the country reports tab for other countries.
