About the Bodleian Oriental Institute Library

Subjects Covered

Middle Eastern & Islamic (including Arabic, Persian & Turkish language & literature); Hebrew & Jewish; Japanese & Korean; Syriac, Ethiopic, Armenian & Georgian; and South Asian.

Admissions

We welcome all University library card and Bodleian Libraries card holders to the Bodleian Oriental Institute Library (OIL).  For information please refer to the Bodleian Libraries' Admissions page.

Inductions are normally held during 0th week or 1st week of Michaelmas Term. Please see our subject pages or ask at the library desk for more details.

Borrowing

Borrowing is restricted to University library card holders.  Books may be renewed if they have not been reserved by another reader.  Please note that fines will be charged on overdue items.  See the Bodleian Oriental Institute Library website for details.

Stack Requests

If you want to order a book from the bookstack or to reserve a book which is out to another reader you will need to make a Request (also known as placing a Hold).     Please note that the same procedure is used both for placing a stack request and for reserving an item in SOLO.  Current members of Oxford University should sign on to SOLO using their Oxford Single Sign on (SSO).  See the SOLO guide at http://libguides.bodleian.ox.ac.uk/solo  for more information about signing on to SOLO.  In addition, readers who are not current members of Oxford University should use their Library card barcode and library password to “sign on” to SOLO in order to place holds and requests, renew loans and access other SOLO features and functionality.
