John Johnson Collection for Local Historians: Genre A-Z

Bill Headings

Bill heading for John Howard

Bill Headings not only include names, addresses and (often) illustrations, but are usually dated and include prices of goods

What types of ephemera might I find?

During #LocalHistoryMonth 2016, we used our Twitter feed: @jjcollephemera to focus on one or more different types of ephemera each day as an A-Z.  These included Advertisements, Booktrade, Billheads, Crime Broadsides, Coaching Bills, Dance Cards, Dioramas, Elections, Envelopes, Flyers, Grocery Papers, Games, Hidden Image Works,Hotels, Insurance, Invitations (Artists), Indexes, Japanese Paper Souvenirs, Keepsakes, Labels, Lottery Bills, Menus, Memorial Cards, Note Headings, Oxford, Paper Bags, Playbills, Quadrilles, Rose Souvenirs, Scraps, Seaside, Lakes & Spas, Stamp Posters, Street Ballads, Trade Cards, Temperance, University, Views, Wayzgooses, Yarmouth (as an example) and (best of all) our new Zegami Trade Card project.  These are just examples of the very many types of ephemera which include information on towns in the United Kingdom, and we have had fun exploring them.  Postcards are another obvious genre.
