John Johnson Collection of Printed Ephemera for Art Historians: Finding names

How to maximise use of the John Johnson Collection to find information about artists and art

Indexes and catalogues

(C) John Johnson Collection: Colour Printing 8 (59)

The names index

Our online catalogue enables you to find names of artists in two ways:

Search.  Set scrollbar to Name.  You can combine this with Keyword, Genre, Title, Subject, Place, Shelfmark, etc.

Browse. This is better, because it enables you to see any variant forms of the name.  We have provide diphs [artist] and [engraver/lithograher] to enable you to find relevant people in the names index.

From any index, you can click on Expand index to view the genre and date (where known) or your results, with checkboxes.

Please note that the default display in our catalogue is a short record. For the full record, click on Bibliographic record. There is a link to an explanation of our cataloguing field numbers (the allegro format) on the same page.

The Artists section

The boxes relating to Artists (mostly illustrators and commercial artists) form an additional resource. They have not been catalogued and therefore will not appear in the Names index.
